Conformational-Dependent Photodissociation of Glycolic Acid in an Argon Matrix

Ultraviolet-induced photodissociation and photo-isomerization of the three most stable conformers (SSC, GAC, AAT) glycolic acid are investigated in a low-temperature solid argon matrix using FTIR spectroscopy employing laser radiation with wavelengths 212 nm, 226 230 nm. The present work broadens wavelength range photochemical studies acid, thus extending understanding overall photochemistry compound. proposed kinetic model for proceeds from lowest energy conformer (SSC). suggests that ultraviolet light induces isomerization only between SSC GAC AAT conformers. relative reaction rate coefficients reported all reactions. These results suggest direct does not occur an matrix. main channel via produces formaldehyde–water complexes. mechanism emphasizes conformers’ abundancies can significantly affect molecule. For example, case high concentrations, requires proceeding to SSC.
